Plan cycle parking around capacity, security and access
A cycle shelter protects parked bicycles from the weather, while an enclosed compound adds controlled access and a greater level of security. The right layout depends on capacity, rack type, circulation space, the available footprint and how the shelter will relate to paths, roads and building entrances.
Measure the full site rather than the nominal shelter footprint alone. Allow room for doors, users manoeuvring bicycles, maintenance access and any chosen cycle stands. Consider lighting, passive surveillance, drainage and whether planning permission or landlord approval may apply.
